Energy-Efficient Automatic Sliding Doors
Learning Objectives:
- Identify and recognize the characteristics of high-performance, energy-efficient automatic sliding doors as defined by national standards.
- Investigate the design potential and innovative opportunities to create improved door openings that are sustainable and energy efficient.
- Assess the multiple potential contributions of automatic sliding doors as they contribute to green and sustainable building designs.
- Specify automatic sliding doors in a variety of green and conventional buildings, and formulate appropriate selections related to specific applications.

The building envelope or building enclosure is the most critical part of a building in terms of energy efficiency. If it is compromised for any reason, then more energy is needed to run heating and cooling equipment. This is especially true of many doors because they are designed with intentional gaps that allow them to function properly but compromise energy performance in the process. In the case of doors, automatic sliding doors are used for many different building locations. Through better design and attention to detail, these doors can achieve high-performance capabilities and contribute to more energy-efficient buildings overall.
