A Sticky Situation in Single-Ply Roofing

Learning Objectives:
- Determine what it means to adhere a roof system, including review of adhesive types.
- Discuss material and substrate limitations when adhering roof assembly components, including vapor barriers, insulation, coverboard and single-ply membranes.
- Recognize key roof system performance attributes of adhered roofs, such as the effect on wind uplift, impact resistance and air intrusion.
- Explore case studies of adhered and mechanically attached roof assemblies, including R-value reductions due to thermal bridging, material costs and overall energy efficiency of the different assemblies.

Roof systems are a complex part of building enclosures with many functions and components; adhesives are often used to hold the components together, while offering improved installation speed and long-term performance benefits. This webinar discusses roofing adhesives in general, as well as providing specifics based on membrane type. Examples will demonstrate how roof system design installation factors are used to meet key project goals: system design, energy-efficiency, wind resistance, resilience and schedules/budgets.

James R. Kirby AIA, GAF’s Building and Roofing Science Architect, has a Masters of Architectural Structures and is a licensed architect. Kristin Westover P.E., LEED AP O+M, is a Technical Manager of Specialty Installations for Low-slope Commercial Roofing Systems at GAF. She has experience with a wide variety of projects in the civil engineering consulting industry specializing in repair and restoration of existing buildings, primarily for commercial buildings and high rise residential structures. Kristin’s project expertise includes roofing, waterproofing, facades, parking garages and pavements. She has performed assessments, written specification and design documents, provided bidding services oversight, and performed construction contract administration. Kristin also has experience in arbitration and litigation support as well as LEED O+M certification for existing buildings.
