  2. %IDifferentiate between types of safety glass including traditional tempered glass and laminated glass and appraise their uses based upon application.
  3. %IAnalyze the aesthetics and performance differences found in a variety of low emissivity (Low-E) coatings used on glass.

Architects have an increasing array of choices in specifying and designing with glass in building facades. Manufacturers are able to provide different glass products in a greater variety of colors, textures and patterns than ever before allowing for enhanced creativity and design excellence in buildings. At the same time, the light transmittance, reflectance, and absorption that occur in a particular pane of glass can be selected based on an increasing choice of coatings and treatments. These attributes affect not only affect the appearance but also the visual and energy performance of the glass and the overall building where it is installed.

This presentation will review some of the current choices in glass commonly available to architects for building facades. Further it will look at the features, attributes, and characteristics of these various choices from both a visual and performance standpoint. Armed with this information, architects can select the most appropriate glass products for the building facades that they design and specify. A quiz is provided to address the principles and concepts learned and allow the participant to earn 1.0 HSW/SD CEU.
