An Introduction to Dynamic Glass
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the performance of electrochromic (EC) glazing and how it can be used to solve the competing challenge of simultaneously achieving energy performance, daylight and views, and human comfort.
- Analyze the aesthetic performance of next-generation EC glazing and how it works compared to conventional solar-control solutions.
- Examine the human factors benefits of EC glazing.
- Explain how EC systems can be controlled to meet energy performance and user comfort needs.
- Understand the key aspects of zoning with EC and how zoning can be used to optimize the tradeoffs between the competing goals of glare control, daylight admission, energy performance, and light color quality.

Designing with glass is a critical element of modern building design, but doing so has traditionally required balancing certain tradeoffs. With the natural light and views glazing provides comes unwanted glare and heat gain too. While not a new issue, the trend toward ever higher glazed areas has made this more of a challenge. This challenge is exacerbated by energy efficiency requirements, which often make it more difficult to build with high glazed areas. Dynamic glass, specifically electrochromic glass, gives architects a new tool to better balance this tradeoff, and in so doing delivers buildings that are more energy efficient, comfortable, and responsive to building occupants. This course provides an overview of electrochromic glass: what it is, how it works, and its benefits.
