This course will offer attendees a building science primer into envelope control layers. The webinar will describe the ways in which heat and moisture interact and move through building envelope assemblies. Next, the session will outline the essential barrier functions of the building envelope and introduce the concept of weather resistant barriers (WRBs). After introducing some common types of WRB products, the webinar will address common misconceptions about envelope control layers. The session will conclude by addressing basic code considerations with regard to WRBs and describing the potential value proposition of building envelope commissioning to better ensure WRBs are applied correctly and effectively.

Daniel Overbey, AIA, NCARB, LEED Fellow, LEED AP (BD+C, ID+C, O+M), WELL AP, EcoDistricts AP is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Ball State University and the Director of Sustainability for Browning Day in Indianapolis. His work focuses on high-performance building design and construction, environmental systems research, green building certification services, energy/life-cycle assessment modeling, and resilient design. Daniel has offered sustainable design leadership on a number of high-profile green building projects including the first certified zero net energy building in Indiana. Daniel is also a committed volunteer at the local, state, and national levels of the American Institute of Architects and U.S. Green Building Council.
