Sustainable Roofing Made Simple
Learning Objectives:
- Demonstrate how to specify a roof assembly that meets an owner’s sustainability goals.
- Describe how the use of roof membranes, coatings and liquid applied roofing can increase the durability of an existing roof.
- Identify the aspects of a roof assembly that can improve a building's energy efficiency.
- Differentiate between various overburden options such as vegetative roofs, blue roofs and blue-green roofs.

Sustainability means different things to different people, and each owner has requirements to meet while achieving the project goals. During this presentation, you will learn how the roof assembly can help meet various sustainability goals. Case studies and specific examples will highlight ways to incorporate circularity, solar reflectivity, durability, energy efficiency and overburden roof assemblies into your design. Overburden assemblies will highlight options such as green roofs, water management, amenity spaces and rooftop solar. The presentation will conclude with an overview of the different sustainability documentation available for roof materials and how specific projects acquired LEED, WELL and Living Building Challenge certifications.

Andrea Wagner Watts is the Building Science Education Manager for GAF | Siplast Building & Roofing Science, engaging with industry professionals to provide guidance, technical support and education for roof and wall assemblies. With more than 15 years of experience in the industry, Andrea strives to improve the overall performance of the building enclosures through application innovation, product development and building science research. She has published on building science, assembly interfaces, durability and resilience and holds multiple patents. Andrea serves as an executive board member of ABAA, is the co-chair of their Technical Committee and chairs the ASTM E06 Task Group on air barriers assemblies. |

Rick Kile is the Director of Green and Amenity Business for Siplast. Upon graduating from the University of Illinois, Rick practiced landscape architecture in both Illinois and Colorado, focusing on community development, commercial, institutional, and high end residential work. Rick has over ten years of experience in the vegetated roof industry, employed by leading roofing and waterproofing manufacturers where he has contributed to some of the most progressive and iconic vegetated roof and over structure landscape projects in the United States and abroad. |
