This course takes a deep dive into low-slope asphaltic roof systems. Attendees will learn a brief history of bitumen (asphalt), BUR roof systems, and modified roof membranes. The course will describe how a high-quality blend of modified bitumen is manufactured, the types and role of the layers of a mod-bit system, the installation options for APP and SBS modified rolls, and the benefits of asphaltic roof systems.

Mary Beth Reed is GAF’s Building Design Manager, Southeast. Having worked in commercial roofing for the past 10 years, on the contracting side prior to the manufacturing side, Mary Beth has a unique perspective balanced between building science principles and real life applications. This, along with her extensive knowledge of roofing systems and Codes, allows her to help the specification community with building design solutions that make sense, are based on best roofing practices, and that work. Mary Beth’s passion for educating, empowering, and mentoring others is demonstrated by her activity in a number of associations including IIBEC (current President of IIBEC Florida), AIA, CSI, National Women in Roofing (Immediate Past President of NWiR South Florida and NWiR Councils Vice-Chair), Roofing Contractors’ Association of South Florida, and as an industry representative for the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals. |

Andrea Wagner Watts is the Building Science Education Manager for GAF, engaging with industry professionals to provide guidance, technical support and education for roof and wall assemblies. With more than 15 years of experience in the industry, Andrea strives to improve the overall performance of the building enclosures through application innovation, product development and building science research. Andrea has published on building science, assembly interfaces, durability and resilience and holds multiple patents. She serves as an executive board member of ABAA, is the co-chair of their Technical Committee and chairs the ASTM E06 Task Group on air barriers. |
