Project: Bottega Veneta
Location: Miami Design District, Miami

Floodproofing: Custom, Aluminum, Curved, Oversized Flood Windows

The Building: The Miami Design District is a neighborhood of Miami, known for its sleek modern architecture, upscale interior design stores and art galleries. Luxury fashion and jewelry boutiques, cafes and celebrity-chef restaurants draw many people here. This fairly flat ground plane is only about a block from the Intracoastal Waterway and is quite vulnerable to flooding. Bottega is an Italy-based high-end woman’s fashion and accessory store owned by the Gucci Group.

The Floodproofing Solution: The store owners were very interested in protecting their expensive inventory from flooding. However, they did not want to compromise the look and appearance of the store. The solution was found in a custom aluminum, curved, oversize flood window system. The 8' x 16’-6” insulated, “S” curved window was installed in November of 2019. It was approved for use in Florida based on its D impact-rated level of protection.

Project: The Main Las Olas
Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Floodproofing: Oversized Walkable Skylight

The Building: The Main Las Olas is a 1.4 million-square-foot, mixed-use office, residential and retail community featuring stunning architecture. The building includes a one-of-a-kind outdoor deck with a walkable skylight on the floor where patrons are encouraged to stand and look down onto Las Olas.

The Floodproofing Solution: The custom, oversized walkable skylight needed to be structurally capable as well as weather tight. The installed solution is 129 inches in diameter with a capacity of over 14,000 pounds. It is configured of four layers of ½” low iron glass with laminations between the glass. The system is a reverse frame with a custom black print edge.
