Learning Objectives:

  1. Outline key elements to consider when specifying materials and systems for healthy and sustainable interiors and how various materials, ceiling systems, and technologies can help create healthy spaces in a post-COVID world, including improved indoor air quality.
  2. Explain how interior finish systems can contribute to the health, productivity, and well-being of building occupants.
  3. Describe how ceiling systems can help earn multiple credit categories in green building programs such as WELL, LEED, and LBC.
  4. Outline how ceiling systems can help meet evolving standards for cleaning, filtration, and air ventilation.

This course is part of the Indoor Environmental Quality: Healthy Design Academy

The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped our world, placing an even greater emphasis on health and well-being inside our buildings. This course will discuss the key elements of healthy and sustainable interiors based on a recent Occupant research study, and the added considerations related to COVID-19 virus transmission. Participants will learn how interior finishing systems, in particular ceilings and wall partitions, can help address these concerns. Emphasis will be placed on systems which help control airflow, clean and filter the air, and/or protect occupants by ensuring adequate physical distancing and design of flexible spaces. Participants will also learn how these systems can help earn green building certification under programs such as LEED, WELL, and LBC, and how these systems can help meet new and evolving standards to protect the health and safety of building occupants in a post-COVID world. Finally, participants will explore how all of these elements come together with new sustainable materials and inspiring design options in the Healthy Spaces Living Lab Pilot, designed in concert with Gensler, on the Armstrong campus.
