This webinar will explore design trends including attempts to achieve total transparency with oversized glass or bent glass. In addition, the course will look at the use of low-e glass to deliver visual and thermal comfort for building occupants.

The presentations will be followed by a moderated discussion focused on how these innovative trends in glass design projects address several key issues, including:

Cost: What tradeoffs, if any, are required to achieve contemporary design excellence, particularly in terms of using energy-efficient, sustainable materials, products, and practices for the optimization of trends in glass design? In the featured projects, what was the ultimate value in the specific design decisions?
Aesthetics: What role did the desire for a particular aesthetic play in determining the scope and main features in the design projects? What were the results of those decisions? What were the obstacles?
Drivers: Did the owners request certain features, or did you, as the architects, propose them? If the latter, what led you to suggest using specific materials or make specific design decisions to support the end goal? How did occupant satisfaction goals inform design decisions?

As a design architect based in SmithGroup’s Dallas office, Randall Daniel leads teams in the design and delivery of engaging and intelligent design solutions. His more than 15 years of project experience includes award-winning work in municipal, higher-education, science and technology, and government facilities. Randall’s holistic approach often leads to his involvement throughout the full lifespan of projects—from programming and master planning, into conceptual development, and throughout the documentation and construction phases..

Alan Kinder is the key projects leader covering the East Coast for Guardian Glass. In his current position, he works directly with design professionals to assist with project review and provide guidance on glass and glazing selections for large commercial project work to ensure building envelope enclosures meet all aesthetic and performance requirements. Alan has worked with Guardian glass for 6.5 years and has also served as territory sales manager and architectural design manager during his tenure. He currently lives in Charlotte, North Carolina.
