BIM for Owners: Easily Manage Spaces and Assets
Owners are faced with the challenge of easily managing spaces and assets beyond design and construction and into operations to successfully sustain and manage buildings ranging from Retail, Office, Lab/Healthcare, Transportation, and Airports. This session will cover how building information modeling (BIM) can enable you to create, manage, report, track, and import data on spaces, furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) across multiple building models. Learn how interoperability between BIM tools plays a major role in referencing and consuming building data in formats such as Revit, Sketchup, IFC, RFA, and COBie to reduce risks. See how you can leverage existing facilities data by promoting legacy 2D CAD graphics to intelligent building spaces and assets for space planning without modeling the entire facility in 3D, as well as how to combine drawings, maps, and models to create a common data environment of your campus.

Conflict Engagement: The Designer's Advantage
Why are solutions to the world’s trickiest problems often never fully realized? For that matter, why is it difficult to address much smaller problems within our own businesses, teams and relationships? The creative and management processes associated with the practice of architecture is naturally prone to conflict. Indeed, the world we seek to change is increasingly filled with conflict, and the stakes are getting higher. Yet our communication skills seem to be getting weaker due inadequate training as well as the proliferation of new technology and social media platforms. Bold initiatives that are intended to drive global change will always involve conflicting opinions, perspectives, and agendas. The New Urban Agenda is no exception, and it’s imperative that we reconsider how all stakeholders need to interact to realize its mission. Conflict engagement, not avoidance, is the very thing that can promote positive change and innovative solutions - and designers have untapped skills they can use to address conflict productively. Session attendees will learn and practice the basic elements of conflict engagement, and leave with the confidence they can design a better conversation with practically anyone.

Innovative Earthquake Architectural Solutions - The CASL System
The benefits will include informing the attendees of new Seismic Structural and Architectural thought and methodology as it relates to previous thinking. Current seismic building design is changing and the CASL is ahead of present day thinking. The attendees will improve their careers by learning an organic and previously unknown system for preventing building collapse in an earthquake scenario. The architectural, aesthetic, and structural ideas put forth during the presentation will acknowledge a path of thought that will change the attendees thought pattern and interest about nature and its inclusion in everyday living. The attendees perspectives will be challenged by questioning the presenters claims and learning from the presentation. Philosophy of ecology and evolution are part of the ideas presented. The CASL System challenges the current status quo by visualizing and showing that architecture and structure can be combined for a single aesthetic look. In current circles on seismic building design the creation of solutions for building collapse and loss of life must be re-evaluated. Current solutions do not work and a high performance solution such as the CASL is needed.

QuickBooks Set-up + Workflow for Architects
All businesses need to cover three functions; operations, marketing and finance. Though most time is spent on operations that generate revenue, all three are of equal importance. Finance by nature is a supportive function that does not generate income, but sustains the business. This workshop will use Quickbooks as the platform and discuss how right set-up and workflow ease regular bookkeeping tasks. Good workflow simplifies monthly billing; be it time-and-materials or fixed-price billing. It produces timely and accurate financial and job reports. The former shows overall company’s performance. The later shows jobs’ performances. Having been in business for thirteen years, Terry wants to briefly share her insight on what it means to be a business owner / leader. Please take food and drink for your enjoyment during the formal presentation. Refreshments generously sponsored by Focus-Grow Bookkeeping. Click here for more information.
