Alphabet Soup: Making Sense Of The Material Transparency Movement
How do we make sense of it all? Health Product Declaration, Cradle to Cradle, Pharos Library, GreenScreen, Environmental Product Declaration, Living Building Challenge, and Declare are just a few of the main programs that are driving transparency in the building product marketplace. Monica Miller Brown, Sustainable Design Manager, thyssenkrupp Elevator Americas, will clear up the alphabet soup that is the material transparency movement and how each program works. We will talk about how each program works and its advantages. Writing specifications that allow you to drive the material transparency movement as a designer, builder or specifier will be covered, as well as how these programs can help you earn points in LEED version 4. Lunch will be provided so reservations are essential. This presentation is registered for both AIA Learning Units and GBCI hours. Speaker : Monica Miller Brown studied to become a landscape architect, but her roots in sustainability go way back: “I am fourth-generation farmer so protecting natural resources is engrained in me.” The move from landscape architect to Sustainable Design Manager was a natural one. Both require problem solving on a site and planning scale in order to incorporate the efficient utilization of resources. “I just shifted from the outside to the inside,” Monica explains. She has both LEED AP BD+C O+M and WELL AP credentials.

Architects in Schools Training Session
Interested in teaching middle school students about architecture and design? Become a mentor in the AIA Chicago Foundation's Architects in Schools (AIS) program. We will be teaching in two schools (Gage Park & Pilsen) this spring semester. AIS is an initiative that brings architecture professionals into classrooms to introduce middle school students to the field of architecture and to discuss the broader theme of architecture as a change-maker. It is a 7-week long program, with 3-5 practicing architect volunteers visiting a single classroom once a week for the duration of one class period (90-120 minutes). The curriculum consists of an introduction to architecture and design, design exercises, and a final group project. The training session will briefly review each lesson plan, outline various mentor levels and necessary time commitments, offer tips on working with students, and more. The program is run by the Community Interface Committee. More about Architects in Schools . Interested mentors please fill out volunteer form and bring to the training session. Big Box Reuse: Transforming a Kmart Into Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep High School
Juan Moreno, AIA, founding principal, and project manager Katie LaCourt, AIA, of JGMA will discuss the firm's ambitious reuse of an abandoned Kmart in Waukegan, Illinois, a model for possibilities nationwide. Akin to its many adjacent industrial sites, this derelict former big-box store, located at the gateway to Waukegan, appealed only to squatters until Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep took an interest. The school is part of the national Cristo Rey network of schools whose mission is to provide high-quality education through a unique pedagogy to students in underprivileged communities. The school's existing facility no longer met its needs, and it looked to its neighbor, the abandoned Kmart, as a possible new home. The building lacked identity and had no connection to its community. Looking past the stigma of an empty big box, the deep floor plates, and the lack of daylighting, there were opportunities: the tall volume, an open floor plan, and adjacent wetlands that could be transformed from an eye-sore into a beacon for Cristo Rey St. Martin. This project is a manifestation of the power of architecture to transform lives and communities. It has become a metaphor for successful change in Waukegan. The project demonstrates that transformational design can occur at any cost, and innovative design is not limited to projects with large budgets. Creative use of resources can lead to impactful and purposeful design. Most importantly, this project has become an integral part of its community and an inspiration as it proudly proclaims its new identity.

Lake Shore Drive Realignment Master Plan
John MacManus, ASLA, a principal at Altamanu, Inc., grew up in Ireland where he studied architecture. He worked at the Chicago office of Skidmore Owings & Merrill before joining the Department of Research and Planning at the Chicago Park District. It was while working there for the late Ed Uhlir, FAIA, that John gained his fascination with public open space and in particular, the lakefront in Chicago. John is working on the feasibility study for North Lake Shore Drive which encompasses the area between Grand Avenue and Hollywood Avenue along North Lake Shore Drive. From the Redefine the Drive web site: Since the NLSD Phase 1 kickoff in 2013, numerous meetings have been held with the public, existing conditions and transportation needs have been identified, and the Purpose and Need Statement has been drafted and approved. The Project Study Group, consisting of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is now in the process of identifying, developing and evaluating alternatives. Bring your lunch; beverages provided.

Looking at H. H. Richardson's
While architect Henry Hobson Richardson’s Glessner House (1885-87) at 1800 South Prairie Avenue is world famous, less well known is the Chicago house that he designed at approximately the same time for the Glessners’ friends, Franklin and Emily MacVeagh. The MacVeagh House , which stood at 1400 North North Lake Drive until it was demolished in 1922, had many similarities to Glessner House but also several key differences. These two houses were both designed near the end of Richardson’s career, for clients who were a part of the same social world but with very different goals in the building of their houses. Comparing the two structures offers an excellent opportunity both to examine Richardson’s varied responses to his clients and to consider just what makes for a successful house. The speakers will show a 3D rendering fly-through of the long-gone structure and will also look at the MacVeaghs' home in Washington, DC, now part of the Mexican embassy to the United States. Speakers: John H. Waters , AIA (Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy preservation programs manager and co-director of the Victorian Society in America Chicago Summer School) and architectural historian Justin Miller from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Light refreshments. The program will begin at approximately 5:45 pm. Hear about the VSA's three summer schools in Chicago, Newport, and London at the end of the program .

Tour: A New Look For The Newberry Library's First Floor
The needs of researchers have changed dramatically, and so have the ways in which the public uses libraries and other cultural institutions. As technology changes and the expectations among patrons evolve, renovating its first floor is essential to providing visitors with new pathways into the Newberry’s collection. To achieve these goals, the library wanted a more welcoming environment: an accessible entrance at the front door, a welcome center; permanent exhibition gallery; redesigned galleries for temporary, thematic exhibitions; expanded bookstore; a lounge area; and flexible spaces for public programs, and event rentals. The renovation was designed by Ann Beha Architects of Boston, a firm with extensive experience updating cultural institutions while staying true to the historic legacies of their buildings. Bulley & Andrews LLC is the contractor. Construction began in January 2018, and the renovated floor opens on September 26, followed by the opening of the library’s next major exhibit, Pictures from an Exposition: Visualizing the 1893 World’s Fair, on September 28. Meet at 8:45 am outside the library entrance, and the tour will begin at 9:00 am sharp. Our tour will be led by: Ann Beha Architects - Ann Beha, FAIA; Steven Gerrard, AIA; Ian Miller, AIA Bulley and Andrews - Mike Lemmons, Project Executive; Glenn Pierce, Senior Project Manager; Jay Quinn, Superintendent Newberry Library - David Spadafora, President and Librarian
