5468796 Architecture forefronts the challenges being faced by architects, builders, developers and policy-makers in their efforts to address housing supply gaps, and presents a ‘toolkit’ of design strategies to meet these demands without compromising quality; and to inspire a culture of knowledge sharing among peers. The session will expand on Practice Ecosystem, describing 546’s approach to the architect’s role in challenging contexts, intersecting with politics, economics, civic governance, social activism, and other forms of cultural and scholarly research; and Toolkit, looking at a selection of the firm’s projects, uncovering a series of design and planning strategies developed over years of experience in the multi-family housing typology.

Johanna Hurme is an architect, co-founder and managing partner of Winnipeg-based 5468796 Architecture. For the past 15 years, the firm has been pursuing a critical architectural response to contemporary issues in multi-family housing and urban design, grounded in real-life practice-based experience and a tandem investigation into world-wide housing research and built work. The firm’s work has been awarded "50 Best Architectural Firms in 2020" by Domus, Rice Design Alliance Spotlight Award, WAN 21 for 21, Architectural League of NY Emerging Voices, and the Design Vanguard by Architectural Record. 5468796 represented Canada at the Venice Biennale in Architecture, and were the recipients of the Prix de Rome Award in Architecture for Canada. Johanna is also an activist and an advocate, having initiated a number of design related events. She is past Chair of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, a member of the International Council Van Alen Institute NY and the President Elect of RAIC I Architecture Canada. She has taught architecture at Cornell University, NY, the College of Architecture, IIT, in Chicago, and at the University of Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Manitoba. Johanna lectures extensively and is co-author of ‘Innovative Solutions for Creating Sustainable Cities’ (2018), and 'platform:MIDDLE', Architecture for Housing the 99%, (2023). |
