Dignity in Design

Specifying adult changing stations in a dedicated restroom

Sponsored by Koala Kare Products

This course introduces and equips design professionals to specify and include adult-size changing stations, which provide a cornerstone to the modern universal restroom. Adult-size changing stations are codified under the 2024 International Code Council’s® (ICC) International Building Code (IBC) 1110.4, which requires adult changing stations in certain public restrooms.

Topics covered within this course include what an adult-size changing station is and who it is for, the elements of a universal or family-assisted restroom, and components within the restroom. Design considerations, such as space, layout, compliance, and ADA requirements are also discussed. Buildings and facilities that need dedicated, universal restrooms are also considered.
