Wind Design Workshop: Don't Be Blown Over By the Nuances in ASCE 7 Calculators

Whether or not you run your own wind calculations or rely on a P.E. to provide uplift pressures for your roof design, this interactive workshop is for you! Come ready with your laptop to roll up your sleeves, work in small groups, and leverage online resources to run wind calcs. You will leave understanding the differences between these resources, the tools to backcheck uplift pressures, the questions to ask project teams, and the red flags to help you avoid the most common traps that lead to under (and over) designed roofs.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Differentiate between the load side and the resistance side and understand how each is presented within the roofing industry. Identify and discuss the foundational elements involved in determining wind loads acting on a building. Understand the requirements within ASCE 7-16 and the roofing industry-developed methods to determine loads. Evaluate roof zone layouts and their effect on installed roof-system capacity. Explain the recent changes and impact of the new information contained in FM’s Loss Prevention Data Sheets 1-28 and 1-29.
