Designing for Care: Human-Centered Healthcare Environments Across the Lifespan  

Healthcare environments must respond to patients' evolving physical, emotional, and sensory needs at every stage of life. From pediatric hospitals that prioritize comfort and reduce anxiety, to high-performance adult care environments designed for durability and efficiency, to senior care settings focused on safety, accessibility, and wellness, architects are increasingly shaping healthcare spaces through a holistic, patient-centered lens.

This webinar examines how healthcare design strategies can support patient well-being across the lifespan through thoughtful material selection, acoustics, interior systems, and evidence-based planning. Through a series of architect-led case studies, presenters will explore how healthcare environments can balance aesthetics, resilience, infection control, accessibility, acoustical performance, and human comfort while meeting the unique functional demands of each care setting.

George Vangelatos, Director of Healthcare Design at HMC Architects, will explore how thoughtful planning and design can create healthcare environments that respond to the physical, emotional, and sensory needs of patients while supporting the complex demands of contemporary care. Drawing on HMC’s Plumas County Skilled Nursing Facility in Quincy, California, George will examine how architects can create welcoming, residential-scale environments that promote comfort, dignity, and social connection while meeting the functional and operational requirements of healthcare facilities. The project addresses a critical need for local skilled nursing care in a rural community, incorporating a neighborhood-inspired layout, shared gathering spaces, natural daylight, and connections to the surrounding landscape. Through this case study, George will discuss how architectural planning, site-responsive design, and access to nature can contribute to healthier, more supportive environments for patients, residents, families, and caregivers.

Jennifer Michalski of Construction Specialties will examine emerging trends shaping the design of contemporary healthcare environments, with a focus on how interior materials and building systems can support patient comfort, safety, privacy, and well-being. Drawing on experience across a range of healthcare settings, the presentation will explore how architects and healthcare organizations are responding to changing patient expectations while addressing the demanding performance requirements of clinical environments. Topics will include durability, cleanability, acoustics, privacy, infection control, and the growing emphasis on creating healthcare spaces that feel less institutional and more supportive of the patient experience.
