Understanding Stone Wool Insulation in Exterior Wall and Rainscreen Applications

[Northern California L&L]
This course will identify what stone wool insulation is and how it is produced, as well as some of its uses in commercial applications, with emphasis on rainscreen cladding design and in exterior cavity walls. We will discuss key benefits of this insulating material when used in the field versus other traditional insulating materials currently used in the North American market. Finally, we will address NFPA 285 requirements relating to cavity insulation and provide updates on new ASHRAE 90.1 2013 continuous cavity insulation requirements.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss the thermal properties and energy efficiency benefits of stone wool versus foam plastic insulation in rainscreen and cavity wall systems.
  2. Examine how stone wool manages moisture as it relates to rainscreen and cavity wall systems.
  3. Describe features and benefits of stone wool in the context of building science and fire safety.
  4. Summarize the environmental and sustainable aspects of stone wool and LEED® credits available.
