Acoustics & Health

This course introduces the effects of sound on health, basics of sound properties, why sound matters in architecture and design and provides practical applications to mitigate noise and improve occupant experience.

This L&L presentation is not intended for the exteriors or residential design community.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explore the technical aspects of sound including sound types, sound quality, and measuring sound.
  2. Define the properties of sound and acoustic performance such as transmission, reflection, diffusion and absorption and how to utilize those properties to design the perfect sound for that space.
  3. Discuss how sound interacts within buildings and how this affects occupant health including how to mitigate sound issues that arise from open concept and biophilic design.
  4. Identify specific applications for better sound quality and control in varying types of spaces to assure that the applications perform the intended purpose.
