Urban Futures: Designing New Commercial Projects in Historic Cities

Architectural Record will present a symposium on three new mixed-use projects in Boston, featuring Katherine Faulkner, AIA, LEED AP, president and founding principal of NADAAA; Michael Liu, AIA, NCARB, principal and vice president of The Architectural Team; and Kishore Varanasi, AICP, principal of urban design at CBT Architects. Moderated by Record editor-in-chief Cathleen McGuigan, the panel will explore large-scale mixed use projects that incorporate spaces for living, working, and playing, as well as each project's integral public realm programs and access to public transportation. The panelists will discuss the challenges of creating these new urban cores amidst the current building boom in Boston, addressing sensitivities around the city’s historic fabric and its proximity to the coast.

Learning Objectives

  1. Outline the security and resilience strategies employed at Cambridge Gateway, given its proximity to major thoroughfares and public transit and its goal of attracting foot traffic day and night.
  2. Discuss the challenge of creating a high level of detail on the Cambridge Gateway building facade, given the immense scale of the project.
  3. Describe the resilience strategies deployed at Clippership Wharf, given its proximity to the water.
  4. Describe how the architects of Cambridge Crossing are creating a cohesive design vision across 20 blocks, 10 acres of green space, and a new MBTA station.
