The Evolution of Glass And High Performance Coatings

Sponsored by Guardian Industries Corp.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify basic materials that combine to create today’s sophisticated and sustainable architectural glass products.
  2. Clarify the types of low-E glass available including pyrolytic and sputter coatings. Review the energy and performance advantages and disadvantages of each type.
  3. Define common energy terms used in the glass and glazing industry.
  4. Explore glass selection criteria used to assure project and performance success.
  5. Assess some of the current trends in the glass industry and the implications for building design and construction.
  6. Analyze the potential simulated energy cost savings that are possible by incorporating high performance glass into building designs.

Glass is one of the oldest fabricated materials in history and has been used in buildings for centuries. In recent times, new technologies and fabrication techniques have focused on energy issues to either keep heat in or deflect it out of conditioned spaces. Further, advances in coating glass in a variety of ways have produced truly high performance glass that takes energy control to a new level. All of this has direct and significant design implications for buildings today. This presentation will review some of the history and current trends in glass commonly available to architects for building designs. Further it will look at the features, attributes, and characteristics of these various choices from both a visual and performance standpoint. With an understanding of these concepts and trends, architects can select the most appropriate glass products for buildings that they design and specify. A quiz is provided to address the principles and concepts learned and allow the participant to earn 1.0 HSW/SD CEU.
